According to Charaka, one of the ancient sage-physicians who wrote down the principles and practices of Ayurveda, a healthy heart is regarded as the central supporting member of the house. From the heart as the root, ten great vessels carry ‘Ojas’ throughout the body.

Ojas, the life sap, is the essence of all the tissues in the body. Just like a tree that creates a sap over the bruise in the bark to protect and heal the bruise, our life sap (Ojas) protects and heals us from illness. To heal the immune system, one needs adequate rest and pure foods and herbs that specifically rebuilds the Ojas. Here is a sublime recipe for when you feel tired to boost your Ojas or Life Sap!

Ojas Milk for One

  • 1 cup raw whole organic milk or almond milk (or other alternative)
  • 10 almonds, soaked overnight, peeled and chopped
  • 2 whole dates, chopped
  • 1/4 teaspoon powdered ginger
  • 1/4 teaspoon powdered cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon powdered cardamom
  • 1/4 teaspoon poppy seeds
  • Pinch of saffron

Place all ingredients (except saffron) in a saucepan. Bring to a low boil. If you like, use a standing blender or immersion blender to blend the mixture to a creamy consistency. Pour in a mug and add a pinch of saffron. Enjoy!
